SnapShot with Adam DeTour

07 Jan 2013

The team at Photo Nights Boston often likes to hear the story behind an image. We call this section "SnapShot" and we recently had the chance to hear from Adam DeTour, a talented portait and food photographer based in Boston.

Here's what he had to say about this photo:

"I took this shot of Diane Paulus, the American Repertory Theater's Artistic Director in Cambridge MA for a story in the Improper Bostonian. Diane is a revolutionary director who has made the theatre more accessible and interactive. She has an incredibly strong vision of what the theater is and can be.

At the time I was consumed with combing through the Farm Security Administration archives online. It's really an incredible resource for gathering inspiration. I came across one of Dorothea Lange's iconic images of a farmer with his weathered hand in front of his face.  I liked the drama of the hard shadows and the idea of a portrait with part of the face obscured in some way.  I combined all those things with the idea of her being beneath the stage lights and came up with the shot of the shadow on her face. The last part of the process before the actual shoot was testing the lighting on a wiling friend."
